WHAT IS EL NINO??
Last year was the second or third warmest on record behind 2016. average surface temperatures in 2017 were 1.1celsius above pre-industrial times.
- El nino happen when a change in prevailing winds caused huge area of water to heat up in the pacific, leading to elevated temperatures worldwide.
- El nino and la nino are the warm and cool phases (respectively) of a recurring climate phenomenon across the tropical pacific- the El nino- southemoscillation, or "ENSO" for short.
- The pattern can shift back and forth irregular evary two to seven years, and each phase triggers predictable disruption of tempera ture, wind and precipitation.
- These changes disput air movement and effect global climate.
